After months of social media and word-of-mouth promotion, Saddle Mountain Digital Marketing Services acquired our first client in May.

Introducing B&S Pest Management & Their Needs

Clatskanie, Oregon resident Alec Shelby, owner of B&S Pest Management, reached out to us after seeing a social media ad, asking if we could give him some website assistance. Upon looking at his website, he already had everything pretty well done (appropriate colors, text showing services offered, etc), but some things could easily be changed to make it appear more “professional.”

Pre-Reconstruction Audit

One major issue that needed to be resolved was that the website looked different on different screen sizes. Even on a computer screen, depending on its dimensions, some information may be completely cut off or overlap with others.

In line with the website’s layout, despite the presence of multiple buttons in the navigation bar, there were only two pages: a homepage and an “About” page. The other buttons automatically scrolled to different sections within the homepage. That being said, the home page had an overabundance of information, which could easily be rearranged and moved to individual pages. When viewed on a desktop/laptop, the “Areas Served” section had two (short) lists side-by-side, whereas if you viewed it on an iPhone, that list was continuous and very long.

A third issue, which could easily be resolved, was that many of the images weren’t bug-related; upon first glance, one might think it was a Pacific Northwest landscape photographer’s website. Albeit stunning, most of the photos were of landscapes or seascapes (There were pictures of notorious rodents and insects, but only on the “Services” Section).

The Reconstruction Process

Knowing the cause for page content not conforming to varying screen sizes, and the fact that B&S Pest Management uses Wix as their website builder and hosting platform (which is one of our favorites), that was the first thing to be resolved. To prevent content from being cut out, a Wix website has an area in the center of the site, with (rather large) margins on either side. If the content is outside this area, there's a good chance that it could get cut off. The annoying thing is that this “safe” area is quite small. To overcome this, you can use a series of “columns” to space out and organize the content, which is exactly what we did. The nice thing about using columns and pre-made sections is that those can be stretched past the margins without compromising page quality.

You’ll now notice for example, that because we used these columns, the box on the right-hand side with “Book Now” is fully in the frame, no matter the screen size

After using the sections and columns to make sure everything would stay in-frame, the next thing we did was make the homepage a little shorter by creating new pages and rearranging content. As noted before, previously, when you would click on a tab in the navigation bar, such as Services, it would simply direct you to a portion of the home screen. We simply created a dedicated Services page and moved the home page content there. This section was reduced from six images to only three. Now, when you click on the “Services” tab, it takes you to a “Services” page.

Content on the “About B&S Pest Management” portion of the homepage was also rearranged, with some going further down the screen under the “Safe and Effective”, “Reliable and Trustworthy”, and “Experienced and Professional” boxes, when applicable, and others on the “Services” page. It’s now much shorter than before.

The final piece of content rearrangement was to make the “Areas Served” section on the homepage more compact, so when viewed on a mobile device, it didn’t seem like you were scrolling on forever. To accomplish this, we sorted the areas first by state, then by county, and put the corresponding areas as collapsible text under a heading for each county. This made it much shorter for mobile device viewers

The final change made was to replace some of the images to make it appear more like a pest control specialist’s website. This process was pretty self-explanatory.

New Additions

Two new features were also added to the site:

  1. Alec also asked if there was a way to link his Google reviews to the website, so we accomplished that by installing an external plugin to present that data in real-time, via embedded code

  2. We chose to take the company logo and a quote from the website: “Choose Local, Choose Quality, Cut the ‘BS’ with B&S Pest Management”, and create a “lightbox” that appears when you first visit the new website.
